SANTA FE — New Mexico marked the 80th anniversary of the Trinity Test with the dedication of a new roadside sign honoring the Trinity Downwinders affected by the blast.
A public dedication ceremony was held Wednesday at the intersection of U.S. Highway 380 and N.M. 525 to unveil the sign and mark the 80th anniversary of the Trinity Test.
The sign is intended to recognize the residents of the Tularosa Basin who were affected. These individuals, sometimes referred to as “Downwinders”, lived near the blast site and experienced health and environmental impacts that continue to resonate today.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT), in accordance with House Memorial 50 passed in 2025, installed a new roadside sign at the intersection of U.S. Highway 380 and N.M. 525 near the Trinity Site, the location of the first atomic weapon test, conducted July 16, 1945.
