State Auditor Joins AG; NMSP In Special Probe Of Alleged Embezzlement By Torrance County Official

STATE News:

ALBUQUERQUE Thursday morning, State Auditor Colón joined Attorney General Balderas and State Police Chief Johnson concerning the criminal investigation into former Torrance County Sheriff and current elected Torrance County Magistrate Judge Heath White for embezzlement and corruption.

Auditor Colón issued the following statement regarding the Office of the State Auditor’s special investigation on the matter:

“On April 29, the Office of the State Auditor put Torrance County on notice that we intend to do a full review to ensure all checks and balances are in place to protect New Mexicans from fraud, waste, and abuse,” Colón said. “The Office of the State Auditor is in a unique position to expand its scope beyond what is documented as the original concerns in the search warrants. It’s not uncommon that instances of alleged embezzlement can be the tip of the iceberg when it relates to fraud. Any time funds are converted or diverted for personal use New Mexicans suffer and that is not acceptable.”

New Mexicans concerned about potential instances of fraud, waste, and abuse should contact the Office of the State auditor. Reports may be made anonymously through our website at www.saonm.org or by calling 1.866.OSA.FRAUD. You may also speak to an investigator by calling 505.476.3800.
