SANTA FE — St. John’s College will hold its 58th Commencement ceremony at 10:30 p.m., Saturday, May 24. Approximately 130 members [LS2] of the Class of 2025, including undergraduates and students in the Graduate Institute’s Master of Liberal Arts and Master of Eastern Classics in-person and low-residency programs, will receive their degrees from the college, which recently celebrated its 60th anniversary in the City of Santa Fe.
St. John’s College Class of 1970 alum and emeritus member of the college’s Board of Visitors and Governors, Dr. Stephen Forman will provide the commencement address. Forman is an internationally recognized physician scientist, known for his groundbreaking work in the treatment of cancer and the development of two new fields of medicine and science, including stem cell transplantation and immune cellular therapy to treat cancer. In his over 40 years at the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer centers, one of the most advanced research and treatment programs in the country, he has been a leader in the care of people suffering from cancer while also conducting both laboratory and clinical research that has dramatically advanced cure rates.
Dr. Stephen currently serves as the director of the Hematologic Malignancies Research Institute and the T Cell Therapeutics Research Laboratory at the City of Hope and is also a visiting associate faculty member at the California Institute of Technology. For more than three decades, he led the Department of Hematology and Stem Cell Transplantation guiding transformative work that has saved many lives and helped advance the future of cancer treatment. In recognition of his work, Forman received both the DKMS Mechtild Harf Science Award and the E. Donnall Thomas Award in 2019, honoring his achievements in transplantation and cancer immunology, and his focus on the care of people suffering from cancer. Forman and Dr. Thomas, who was the 1990 Nobel Laureate in medicine, published the first textbook in their field. As an alum of the college, he has provided mentorship and internship opportunities for Johnnies interested in the medical field.
