The Hair and Nail Studio is tucked away in the corner of the office building behind Pig and Fig, at 26 Sherwood Blvd. in White Rock. You can’t see the studio from the street, but that hasn’t kept it from developing a dedicated clientele, owner Sharon Fox said.
The studio opened in 2007, but many White Rockers may not know about it due to its hidden location. Customers have to walk up a ramp to see the shop front.
“The studio kind of fell into my lap,” Fox said. “I’m really glad I went for it.”
Fox has been a stylist since 1992 and Los Alamos resident since 1994. She grew up in Las Cruces and attended beauty school in Albuquerque.
“I met a friend at beauty school who grew up in Los Alamos,” Fox said. “She got me an interview with a local salon. I really like it here.”
Fox shares her studio with another stylist, Teri Dowdy, who rents space from Fox.
“We do pretty much everything,” Fox said. “We do perms, color, highlights and lowlights and up-dos as well as cuts. For nails, we do manicures and pedicures. We use acrylics and gel polish and we also have dip powders.”
Dip powders are a form of acrylic that gives strength but is thinner than other acrylics, and it comes in colors.
“I love the camaraderie with the clients,” Fox said. “I love giving them confidence and making them look beautiful.”
The pandemic has caused a downturn, but the studio stays fairly busy, Fox said.
“It’s dwindled a bit, but we have lots of regulars,” she said. “The pandemic has forced us to do fewer people at a time and some folks are waiting out until COVID is over to come in.”
“We want people to know we are open,” Fox said. “We’d love to add new clients. We’re here and we’re taking appointments!”
To schedule an appointment with Fox or Dowdy, or to learn more about the studio, call 505.672.9595. Fox takes credit cards, checks and cash. Dowdy prefers checks or cash. The studio is closed Sundays.
