Nov. 26 is Small Business Saturday and an opportunity for the community to show its support by visiting and shopping at local businesses in Los Alamos and White Rock.

Los Alamos and Metzger’s Do It Best have a long history together. Metzger’s has been in business since 1947.

“When the decision was made to make Los Alamos a permanent community after the Manhattan Project, officials approached Lee Metzger Sr about opening a retail store in Los Alamos, knowing that Mr. Metzger had done business with the Manhattan Project in Hanford, Wash., and therefore had the appropriate security clearance to operate in Los Alamos,” General Manager David Jolly said.

Since that time, Metzger’s has undergone many changes as the company has evolved to meet the changing needs of the community, including the opening of a second location in the new community of White Rock as it was developed in the early 1970s, Jolly said, adding that the company is currently operated by Greg Metzger, the third generation of the Metzger family to own the business.

“The greatest thing about Metzger’s is the combination of being a small, family-owned company, which allows us to adapt quickly to our customers’ needs, while at the same time being associated with Do it Best, a member-owned hardware cooperative that services nearly 4,000 member-owned stores throughout the country,” Jolly said. “The association with Do it Best allows us to take advantage of purchasing discounts and best-in class business support that many small businesses do not have access to, while at the same time maintaining a family culture so we can personally relate to our customers and employees on an individual basis.”

Jolly’s message to everyone in the community is to never assume you can’t get something in Los Alamos. Metzger’s carries a unique assortment based solely on what they hear from their customers, and if  they don’t have an item in the store, their warehouse delivers every week, so there’s a very good chance they will have it in stock quickly.

“We also work hard to keep our pricing competitive, and match prices when we aren’t. We know that our customers have many choices, so we strive to earn the chance to be their first choice,” he said.

Metzger’s employs 32 people, many of whom are long-term employees including their longest term employee, head bookkeeper Sue Smith, who has been with the company since 1992.

Metzger’s is at 1607 Central Ave. in Los Alamos and 128 State Road 4 in White Rock. For more information, visit metzgers.doitbest.com.
