LAPS News:
Several jazz combos and ensembles will take to the stage starting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12 in Duane Smith Auditorium at Los Alamos High School.
Six Los Alamos Jazz Project student combos, both Los Alamos Middle School Jazz Band 1 and Jazz Band 2, Los Alamos High School Jazz Band, and Los Alamos High School Vocal Jazz Ensemble will be performing jazz from New Orleans.
The public is invited and encouraged to attend this special concert. Admission is free; however, a $5 donation per person is requested to help raise funds for LAMS Jazz Band 1’s upcoming competition in Santa Cruz, Calif.
“We are extremely proud and excited to showcase the hard work and dedication all of the students have put forth in rehearsals as preparation for this concert and upcoming competition, said Ryan Finn, executive director of the Los Alamos Jazz Project and music educator at LAMS and LAHS. “It is exciting to watch our students grow as young jazz musicians and expand and strengthen their knowledge and abilities.”
This concert is a preview concert for the upcoming Albuquerque/UNM Jazz Festival, where five of the 10 groups performing Wednesday evening will be adjudicated alongside other jazz ensembles from around the state. The Alb/UNM Jazz Festival is Friday and Saturday Feb. 21-22 at Eldorado High School.
Additionally, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14-15, the New Mexico Middle School Honor Jazz Band Clinic will be hosted by the Los Alamos Jazz Project here in Los Alamos. Alongside middle school students from other schools, several LAMS students auditioned and were selected to participate in this event. The concert for this event is 3 p.m, Feb. 15 at Crossroads Bible Church.
