SKI News:

VADITO Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort is opening Thursday, Oct. 31 for its earliest opening day ever.

Cool temperatures at night and early season snow (including 8-inches for the month of October) allowed the resort to open the mountain more than three weeks ahead of schedule.

The Halloween opening marks the first time Sipapu has opened for skiing and snowboarding in the month of October and the 17th consecutive time it has been the first resort to open in New Mexico.

“We’ve had Nov. 22 in our sights for some time,” said John Paul Bradley, Sipapu’s general manager, speaking of the resort’s original opening date. “But between the cold temperatures and the bonus snowfall, this crew was inspired to make history.”

Sipapu will open Lift 5 on a 12-inch base 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday with access to one of the resort’s popular runs, Thumper. Sipapu’s rental shop and limited food services at the Riverside Cafe will be available, while ski school will open in November.

Following the Thursday opening, Sipapu will be open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 13, when the resort will open for daily operations.

Lift ticket prices will be $35 for adults (ages 18-59) and $30 for youth (ages 11-17) and seniors (ages 60-69). Guests 70 and older receive a free lift ticket everyday and kids 10 and younger receive a free Power Kids pass – a season pass that’s valid everyday at Sipapu, Pajarito Ski Area, Purgatory Resort, Hesperus Ski Area, Arizona Snowbowl, Nordic Valley Ski Area and Spider Mountain Bike Park.

After nearly two decades of claiming the title of “first to open,” Sipapu prides itself on its early season conditions while being the mountain where New Mexico skiers and snowboarders make their first turns. With the Halloween opening, Sipapu will be one of just seven resorts open in the country.

New for the 2019/20 Season, Sipapu will introduce Camp Bigfoot, a new progressive learn to ski or ride program for children and youth, ages 5 to 12. This 4-session skiing and snowboarding program provides the best introduction to snow sliding, progressive skill development and sparking a passion for snowsports and the mountains in a fun environment.

Sipapu will continue to offer affordable lift tickets, events and special promotions (including the guest-favorite Free Lodging Days) throughout the season. For more information, visit sipapu.ski or contact Ian McPherson at imcpherson@mcp.ski.
