Shop on the Corner Offers Christmas Bargains

SOTC News:

The annual Shop on the Corner Christmas Sale will offer holiday bargains on Wednesday, Dec. 4. The thrift shop sale is 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and includes both brand new and gently used  items, which the volunteers set aside all year.

Holiday decorations, festive and new clothing, toys and games, books and music, linens, china and glassware, jewelry, leather goods, and gifts are some of the items that will attract scores of bargain hunters, collectors, and hobbyists.

Shop on the Corner thrift store is in the lower level of Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church, off Canyon Road near the corner of Diamond Drive in Los Alamos. The Shop has been in operation for more than four decades and is staffed completely by volunteers.

The Shop’s mission is to help Los Alamos County residents recycle their usable clothing and household items; to provide an inexpensive market for the Northern New Mexico community to purchase these items on a budget; and to use the proceeds from the thrift store to donate to local and regional charities and other worthy causes. The Christmas Sale raises a significant part of the Shop’s outreach budget each year.

Recent grants were given to a number of agencies and organizations which included Self Help and LA Cares in Los Alamos County; Amigos del Valle in Espanola; St. James Food Pantry in Taos; St. Elizabeth Shelter in Santa Fe; and Casa Esperanza in Albuquerque. One day’s sales were donated to New Mexico flood relief after the September storms. Blankets and warm clothing were donated to Border Ministries serving the border communities of Mexico.

Shop on the Corner also recycles donations. Warm clothing and other useful items are given regularly  to the Bernal  Community Center. Surplus items are donated to Big Brothers/ Big Sisters.

Items that are flawed but still usable are placed in a “free” bin in the entryway to the Shop. Anyone may take these items at no charge.

Shop on the Corner is open most Wednesdays. Regular hours are 8:45-11:45 a.m., and on the first Wednesday of each month, the Shop is open until 12:30 p.m. Donations of items in good to excellent condition may be dropped off at the Shop during business hours. Shop on the Corner cannot accept large items such as furniture. Call the church office at 505.662.5107 for more information.
