When we think of police, we usually think of these big crazy people who  chase you down on the highway for speeding. We think of our laws, we might also think that they are all fat because they go to the doughnut shop.

Well, this officer’s story might make you start judging differently. He is your everyday officer one may see on patrol or around town. His name is Sgt. Chris Ross and he is in charge of the School Resource Officers (SRO) at Los Alamos Public Schools. Ross was born and raised in San Diego, Calif., and grew up within a large suburb.

“I loved the variety of experiences, the culture and the way of life as well as the opportunities,” he said.

During high school, Ross was very active, being involved in three different sports including football, baseball and golf.

“Throughout high school, I was very active in sports and uhh social life, we can say that,” Ross said laughing about his high school experience.

Ross went to Eastern New Mexico University on an Athletic Scholarship and was planning on going into business. When he began studying business he quickly found out that he was not as interested in this program as he thought he would be. After talking to his college professor about different career options, Ross found out that he was a retired detective and the way he explained it the overall idea of the career engaged him.

After he had finished college Ross joined the Los Alamos Police Department and has been there for 15 years. During his free time, Sgt. Ross enjoys playing golf, spending time with his kids, going out to the lake with his boat and he likes to travel.

When asked to share some words of inspiration, Sgt. Ross said, “A lesson that I would say I like to teach other people is to not be afraid to fail or make mistakes, that mistake does not define who you are, it is the actions you take after that define you.”
