…Volunteers needed for trails projects in Pecos Wilderness – last day to sign up
SANTA FE – This Saturday, June 5, is National Trails Day®, a day when thousands of people come together across the country to advocate for, maintain and clean up public lands and trails.
New Mexico Volunteers for the Outdoors (NMVFO) and the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) are sponsoring two trail maintenance events in the Pecos Wilderness on National Trails Day to highlight the value of trails and outdoor recreation in general to our collective well-being.
To participate in one of these events, register today:
- Holy Ghost Trail near Tererro. Volunteers will be cutting back brush, clearing fallen trees and branches, and improving the trail tread. Participants will meet at the Holy Ghost Trailhead at 8:30 a.m. Register for this event here.
- El Porvenir Trail near El Porvenir Campground. Volunteers will be cutting back brush and clearing fallen trees and branches from the trail. Participants will meet at the El Porvenir Trailhead at 8:30 a.m. and hike a mile to the work site. Register for this event here.
The SFNF requires that trail volunteers wear a face mask, work gloves, long pants, long-sleeved shirts, sturdy boots and a hard hat. Hard hats and tools will be provided.
Bring sunglasses or another kind of eye protection and a day pack with sunblock, lunch, snacks and plenty of water.
COVID-19 protocols will be followed.
