SANTA FE — Starting Monday April 15, the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) will begin selling fuelwood permits for dead and downed, and green juniper at the SFNF Headquarters and the Pecos/Las Vegas District Office. Free use permits will also be available.
Dead and downed wood will be $20 for 10 cords and green juniper wood from Rowe Mesa for $10 per one cord. Fuelwood permits and dead and down permits will be available at the Coyote, Cuba, Española, and Jemez District Offices beginning May 1. These permits can be purchased with cash, check or credit card.
Pick up permits in-person or over the phone at the following locations:
- Forest Supervisor’s Office/SFNF Headquarters – 11 Forest Lane, Santa Fe, 505.438.5300. Call ahead of time to confirm staff are available to sell permits;
- Las Vegas Ranger Station – 1926 7th St., Las Vegas, 505.425.3534;
- Pecos Ranger Station – 32 South Main St., Pecos, 505.757.6121;
- Coyote Ranger Station – 20 Private Drive 1707, Coyote, 575.638.5526;
- Cuba Ranger Station – 04B, County Road 11, Cuba, 575.289.3264;
- Española Ranger Station – 18537 US 84/285, Suite B, Española, 505.753.7331; and
- Jemez Ranger Station –51 Woodsy Lane, Jemez Springs, 575.829.3535.
District dead and downed fuelwood permits are valid throughout SFNF, except in designated wilderness and other excluded areas. Fuelwood maps are posted on the SFNF website.
Permit holders will receive load tags, a fuelwood cutting map, and guidelines for harvesting the wood. Firewood permit holders should also make sure they have the appropriate equipment to harvest the wood and safely transport it home including nails or some other method to secure load tags to the product permitted.
Forest Service staff may be in the cutting areas to check permits and answer questions. Permit holders are advised to check with the local Ranger District office or the New Mexico Department of Transportation website for current road and weather conditions. As a reminder, only travel on roads designated on the Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM) unless the permit specifies otherwise. MVUMs are available for download and paper maps are free at all District Ranger offices and SFNF Forest Headquarters.
