Senate Passes ‘Rocket Docket’ Legislation, Interstate Medical Compacts (SB 1) & Harm To Self & Others (SB 3) Head To House Of Representatives

NMSR News:

SANTA FE — Jan. 23, the New Mexico State Senate successfully streamlined the passage of several pieces of legislation, including Interstate Medical Compacts (SB 1) and Harm to Self and Others (SB 3) which were introduced on opening day in a ‘rocket docket’ and now make their way to the New Mexico House of Representatives.

This collaborative show of bipartisanship is due in large part to fierce Republican advocacy to improve healthcare access and public safety in New Mexico. In fact, these Democrat-sponsored  pieces of legislation are built on Republican proposals that have been introduced without success in years past.

“This is what commonsense leadership and true progress looks like,” said Senate Republican Leader Bill Sharer (R-Farmington). “We as Republicans are proud to have been instrumental in showing our fellow legislators from across the aisle the light when it comes to improving healthcare access for New Mexicans and keeping dangerous individuals off our streets.” The Senator continued, “Make no mistake, we are far from truly accomplishing our goals for New Mexicans. If we fail to reform our state’s medical malpractice laws, New Mexico will continue to drive healthcare providers out of our state. As for public safety, while this is an important step, it’s only the first of many steps needed to make our communities safer.”

Sen. Sharer concluded, “Senate Republicans remain optimistic for the progress ahead. We will continue to fight for the people of our great state and will work with whoever it takes in order to deliver the results all New Mexicans are demanding!”
