New Mexico Sen. Jim Townsend announced on Tuesday, Jan. 20, his appointment to the Senate Judiciary Committee, effective immediately.

Sen. Townsend previously served on the House Judiciary Committee and brings a wealth of experience to the panel, which oversees matters ranging from constitutional law and the court system to public safety and civil rights. To accommodate this new assignment, the Senator will be stepping down from his current role on the Conservation Committee.

“I am excited to once again begin serving on the Judiciary Committee effective immediately,” Sen. Townsend said. “While I will miss my committee assignment in Conservation, the responsibility of the Judiciary Committee is critically important to my district and state.”

Ensuring the legal systems are fair, efficient, and constitutional is a duty Sen. Townsend said he takes very seriously.

During his previous tenure, Sen. Townsend was a vocal advocate for judicial transparency and legislative oversight. His return to the Judiciary Committee ensures that his constituents continue to have a powerful voice in the most pressing legal and ethical debates facing the state today.

“My priority has always been to serve where I can do the best for the people who elected me,” Townsend added. “The work done in the Judiciary Committee directly impacts the safety and rights of every citizen, and I am ready to get back to work.”
