ELECTION News:

SANTA FE – New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver is releasing the following statement and information about pending vote counts in a handful of counties following the June 2 Primary Election.

“I’m so proud of the incredible work that’s been put in by New Mexico’s election administrators and poll workers for yesterday’s historic and unprecedented Primary Election that saw higher overall voter turnout than any Primary Election in recent memory,” Secretary Toulouse Oliver said. “My Office has been working in conjunction with the state’s County Clerks, election vendors, and the US Postal Service since before the first cases of COVID-19 hit New Mexico in preparation for today’s election and it’s clear the hard work paid off. Voters responded amazingly well to the call to vote safely from home using an absentee ballot, with over 247,000 absentee ballots cast. New Mexicans showed today that they won’t be deterred from making their voices heard and exercising their democratic rights even under the most challenging of circumstances.”

Due to the unprecedented number of voters who voted using an absentee ballot for the 2020 Primary Election, the following counties will have delays in counting votes and reporting their results:

  • Bernalillo County
  • Doña Ana County
  • McKinley County
  • Santa Fe County
  • Taos County
  • Valencia County

As of the time of this release our Office is still ascertaining exact figures of pending votes and we will provide an update later today.

Pursuant to state law, counties protect and ensure chain of custody for any ballots still to be counted. Any county with ballots still to be counted for the 2020 Primary Election has until 7 p.m. today, June 3 to finish, with a district court order being required to extend that deadline.

Unofficial election results can be found at the Secretary of State’s website: https://www.sos.state.nm.us/.
