Science On Tap With Dr. Mark Boslough Oct. 21

Dr. Mark Boslough

Los Alamos Creative District News:

Join the Bradbury Science Museum and the Los Alamos Creative District for Science On Tap at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21 at projectY cowork, 150 Central Park Square.

This On Tap will feature a conversation with Dr. Mark Boslough about uncertainty and risk at the planetary catastrophe threshold.

What is the probability that the Earth will be wiped out, in our lifetimes, by the impact of an enormous asteroid or comet? How does it compare with the self-inflicted threat of catastrophic global warming?

Should we worry more about existential planetary threats that are unlikely on a human timescale, regional or local impact, or climate hazards that are virtually certain to be both deadly and costly? The traditional tools of probabilistic risk assessment and cost-benefit analysis begin to break down at the catastrophe threshold.

What should impact and climate scientists tell policy makers who must make decisions on how to allocate resources to address threats of this nature?

Science On Tap is sponsored by the Bradbury Science Museum in partnership with the Los Alamos Creative District and hosted at projectY cowork.

More information about Science On Tap and other Bradbury Science Museum programs and events can be found at https://www.lanl.gov/museum/events/.

The On Tap series begins each evening with an informal 10-15 minute topic introduction by the speaker, followed by a lively group discussion. All ages are welcome! is a way for people to get out and about in the community, learn something new, and meet people with similar interests. The discussions are supported by the Bradbury Science Museum, Los Alamos Historical Society and Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC).

Registration for this event is not required. Admission is free. UnQuarked Wine Room by Sirphey will be offering a wide selection of wines for purchase at this event.
