Science On Tap: Threat Of Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria

BSM News:

The Los Alamos Creative District will present the next installment of its On Tap series at 5:30 p.m., Thursday at UnQuarked – The Wine Room, 145 Central Park Square.

The Bradbury Science Museum (BSM) hosts this week’s brief presentation and interactive discussion that follows.

Harshini Mukundan, research scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, will discuss the global threat of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Mukundan asserts the unnecessary and uncontrolled use of antibiotics and the use of antibiotics in food animals to prevent, control and treat disease and for promoting growth are only some of the reasons for the rapid increase in antibiotic resistance

“To prevent the world from entering a post-antibiotic era in the very near future, where even common infections can prove life threatening, urgent and immediate change is mandatory,” says Mukundan. “The choices we make and the responsibility we show can slow down the emergence of antibiotic resistance and ensure the viability of these miracle drugs for future generations.”

The Los Alamos Creative District regularly brings On Tap to downtown Los Alamos. The series features rotating themes of history, nature and art hosted by the Los Alamos Historical Society, Pajartio Environmental Education Center, or Fuller Lodge Art Center respectively. Science On Tap by the Bradbury Science Museum is every third Thursday of the month.

The Los Alamos Creative District, designated by the State in 2009, is part of a statewide network of cultural districts organized through the New Mexico Arts and Cultural District Program. The mission of the Creative District is to advance the community’s unique creative identity and generate increased economic prosperity by curating and providing local cultural programming that connects a broad range of stakeholders.
