Staff Report

At Tuesday night’s School Board Meeting, Superintendent Gene Schmidt presented the first draft of a letter to New Mexico Secretary of Education Designate Hanna Skandera expressing concerns and requesting changes to the state Teacher Evaluation System as well as addressing other matters.

The letter was formulated based on meetings of a committee for teacher concerns and input from school principals. In a 3-2 vote, the Board passed a resolution proposed by Board Member Kevin Honnell stating that the written proposal to the Public Education Department be contingent on a simple majority of the LAPS certified staff (teachers and principals) expressing support for the proposal.

Board President Jim Hall and Board Member David Foster voted against the resolution. Hall said he thought taking a vote abdicated the Board’s responsibility to make policy. He also expressed concerns about the time it would take.

The board will review a second draft of the letter Nov. 21 and teachers will be polled prior to Thanksgiving break.
