KIWANIS News:

The 2023 winner of the Jeannette O. Wallace Scholarship, Yunseo Kim, daughter of Hyunjoo and Yongho Kim, spoke to the Los Alamos Kiwanis at their meeting June 6 and talked about her community service experience and future plans.

She has been very active in Kiwanis sponsored Key Club and in the Rotary programs. Kim has helped pack thousands of meals for the needy, helped the Peace Club raise $8000 for Ukrainian refugees, and assisted with food and clothing drives in Albuquerque and Los Alamos.

In addition, she helped raise money for Key Club projects, such as selling cotton candy at community events. She worked with Natural Helpers to assist people who were suffering because of mental health problems or COVID, as well as training other students in how to help.

Kim wants to study at Columbia University, majoring in political science and human rights and hopes to become a diplomat or perhaps an ambassador at the United Nations.

The meeting continued with an informative talk by Dennis Gill, chairman of the Scholarship Committee who briefed the club on the committee’s work. He described the scholarship selection process and expressed appreciation for the academic and community service excellence of the applicants.

Kiwanis handles the award of several scholarships established by families and organizations, notably the Jeannette O. Wallace Scholarship, the Lee and Lou Pierotti Scholarship, and the Steve Stoddard Scholarship. Gill called on Kiwanians who knew the people involved to describe why their names are honored today with these scholarships.

Gill then asked Tina Nisoli, who was the recipient of a Steven Stoddard scholarship in 2022 in her first year of college to describe what it is like to receive one of the scholarships presented by Kiwanis. She said that she realized the true value of her scholarship when it allowed her to be able to reduce her work hours and concentrate on her studies. She attends the University of New Mexico and is studying to become a nurse.
