COUNTY News:
Every household has stuff. Sometimes it is wanted and sometimes it isn’t. But reconsider tossing undesirable items in the trash can; it might be just what someone else needs. Plus, Los Alamos County is offering a new avenue to give away stuff.
This new avenue, the Reuse Center at the Overlook Convenience Center in White Rock, was unveiled by Los Alamos County Environmental Services, County officials and members of the community Wednesday.
The reuse center at Overlook is larger than the reuse center at the Eco Station. Residents are free to come and take items from the Reuse area. If residents would like to leave items at the Reuse area, it will count as one of their 12 annual loads.
Deputy County Manager Linda Matteson said the center promotes sustainability and diverts material from the landfill. She encourages people to leave gently used items but to take used clothing to other organizations such as the Big Brother Big Sister collection box at the Eco Station.
County Sustainability Manager Angelica Gurule also encouraged the public to take advantage of the Reuse Center.
“We welcome you to bring your items,” she said.
Gurule further explained that the center was funded by a New Mexico Clean and Beautiful grant.
Additionally, the Environmental Sustainability Board, Zero Waste Team, Gurule, Environmental Services Division Manager Armando Gabaldon and Environmental Services Office Specialist Joshua Levings were all recognized for making the reuse center a reality.
The center is open Friday through Tuesday. It is closed on Wednesday and Thursday. Environmental Services Division employee Brahm Williams is operating the reuse center.
