More than 300 members of the American Legion family spent June 25-28 in Los Alamos attending the 96th annual Department of New Mexico Convention.

The American Legion Frank G. Frainier Post 90 hosted the event at 1325 Trinity Dr., during which American Legion members and their families also spent time touring local sites.

Several people were honored at the convention including past Department Commander (1990-91), Roger Rasmussen for his 33 years of support to the American Legion, its mission and programs. Los Alamos Deputy Fire Chief Justin Grider was recognized for his 18 years of service to the community and Los Alamos Police Cpl. James Keane for rescuing a man from a burning home.

Los Alamos County Councilor Pete Sheehey delivered a County Proclamation to the 96th Annual American Legion Convention. Sheehey, a veteran himself, became a member of Frank G. Frainier, Post 90 during the convention.

New Mexico Dist. 43 Rep. Stephanie Garcia Richard is a member of the American Legion. She addressed convention members regarding work underway in the State to help veterans.

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is committed to mentoring youth, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to fellow service members and veterans.
