SBDC News:

Eric Quintana, owner and CEO of Performance Maintenance Inc. (PMI), was recognized during the recent U.S. Small Business Administration’s National Small Business Week ceremony in Washington, D.C. Quintana was honored as New Mexico’s Small Business Person of the Year and was also honored locally during the SBA district ceremony in Albuquerque.

Founded in 1994 by Eric and Celina Quintana, PMI began as a small side business created to help buy Christmas presents for their sons. What started as a part-time cleaning job has grown into one of New Mexico’s most respected family-owned maintenance and supply companies.

Today, Eric and Celina operate the business alongside their children, Eric Jr, Daven and Rossana.

PMI employs more than 200 people across New Mexico and operates full-service locations in Española, Los Alamos, and Santa Fe, with growing accounts in Albuquerque. PMI also ships nationwide from their online store (PMI.GREEN). The company provides janitorial services, specialty deep cleaning services, selling sustainable cleaning products, and provides full facility support for major institutions, including Los Alamos National Laboratory, hospitals, schools, tribal governments, museums and local businesses.

PMI is preparing for its next phase of expansion with plans for a new 20,000-square-foot distribution center that will strengthen operations and support continued regional growth. PMI is a one-stop shop, serving large institutions, small local businesses, and the public.

“National Small Business Week is about recognizing the job creators, builders, and innovators who fuel our nation’s economy,” SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler said.

“It is truly an honor to recognize the extraordinary dedication and success of Eric Quintana,” SBA Region VI Regional Administrator Justin Crossie said. “Here in New Mexico, we see every day the resilience and innovation that small businesses bring to our communities. Eric’s leadership at Performance Maintenance Inc. was recognized on the national stage in Washington DC as New Mexico’s small businessperson of the year. PMI’s accomplishments embody the spirit of New Mexico’s entrepreneurs and highlight the vital role small businesses play in strengthening local communities while representing New Mexico with distinction nationwide.”

PMI has become widely recognized for its “One Call Does It All” approach, offering customized service solutions and environmentally responsible cleaning systems. PMI has spent 30 years investing in green cleaning technologies, workforce training, and advanced safety practices. PMI offers its own line of green products and believes in a healthier environment.

One of PMI’s largest accomplishments came through its long-standing work with Los Alamos National Laboratory. In 2019, PMI secured a five-year subcontract valued at $52 million to provide janitorial services and supplies. As of 2025, PMI now holds contracts structured for up to 10 years with a total potential value exceeding $152 million. Eric and Ron Lovato, CEO, TSAY Corporation and Pueblo Alliance, LLC partner on a major subcontract with Triad at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

“What began as a simple Christmas side job to provide for our boys became a 30-year journey of building something bigger than ourselves,” Quintana said. “PMI was founded on hard work, responsibility, and treating people right while investing in both our employees and our customers and delivering value-added quality at every step. That’s the “PMI Way” mindset. We don’t just drop off products and walk away—we stay, we train, and we ensure everything works from start to finish. At PMI, we use the products we sell and train our team to uphold our standards, so every customer receives consistent, high-quality service and support. We’re not just a business; we’re a family, committed to quality, integrity, and honoring every promise we make.”

Over the last 30 years, PMI has received many local, state, and national awards, including:

  • SBA New Mexico Small Business Person of the Year
  • DOE HUBZone Small Business of the Year
  • New Mexico SBA Entrepreneurial Success Award
  • SBDC NNMC State STAR Business Award
  • Sustainability and Green Business Leadership honors

PMI’s growth has also been supported through a longstanding partnership with the Small Business Development Center at Northern New Mexico College and SBDC Director Julianna Barbee. Quintana insisted that Barbee join him and Daven on stage when he received the SBA National Award New Mexico Small Business Person of the Year in Albuquerque.

“I am proof the SBDC and SBA program works,” Quintana said.

“When I started my business 31 years ago, I leaned hard on Julianna Barbee from A to Z, and that hasn’t stopped. We are in constant contact and anytime I have a problem or need help she is there for us and a good thing it doesn’t cost; we really like that! I would like to dedicate this award back to SBDC Julianna Barbee, we were lucky enough to go to Washington, D.C., I got the national award, and we have all worked hard for this, thank you.”

“The SBDC and Director Julianna Martinez-Barbee have been instrumental guides for PMI’s growth from the very beginning,” Daven added. “From identifying unique opportunities and programs we otherwise wouldn’t have known existed, to facilitating connections with crucial partners and customers, Julianna’s dedication to our success has been remarkable. Beyond organizational support, Julianna has personally coached me through speaking engagements and helped curate media content and videos that elevated our brand within the community. We are incredibly fortunate to have a program like SBDC: their support is an essential pillar for small businesses, and I cannot imagine PMI reaching its current level of success without Julianna and SBDC.”

In addition to business growth, PMI remains deeply committed to community service and workforce development. Quintana has served on numerous boards, councils, and economic development initiatives throughout Northern New Mexico while mentoring other small businesses and supporting local organizations.

From humble beginnings to becoming one of the region’s largest employers, PMI continues to demonstrate how dedication, family values, and community investment can build lasting success.

PMI represents the dedication, leadership, and community commitment that define successful American small businesses. Its story sends a clear message to small businesses across the nation. Start small, work hard, plan carefully and stay committed. The results can last a lifetime.
