SFAS News:
The Santa Fe Animal Shelter (SFAS) & Humane Society threw a party Friday for a handful of dogs who have been at the shelter for more than 100 days.
In an effort to draw attention to their long wait for a permanent home, the pups were provided with additional love, belly rubs and tons of treats that they would typically get once they were adopted.
The shelter’s longest resident is Julie, a 3-year-old brown brindle Staffordshire terrier mix, who has been there for 233 days. Julie arrived at the shelter in July 2022 when she was picked up as a stray.
“Today is the day we want to show these dogs that they are worthy of not only care but love, compassion, and kindness,” said SFAS public relations officers Murad Kirdar on Friday. “We never know why potential adopters overlook some animals, but we have so many great dogs that would be a great addition to any family.”
Doja, a white Labrador Retriever mix who is just over a year old, has been at the shelter for 185 days. According to Kirdar, she is an enthusiastic, energetic, and intelligent pup who knows many basic commands.
Paisley, now on day 167, is a black and white Pitbull mix and enjoys playing with toys and a bit of fetch. Lino, a red and white Staffordshire terrier, is on day 135, and tan and black shepherd mix Nicholas just hit day 100.
The pup-tastic party was attended by staff, volunteers, and members of the public, who provided lots of head scratches and made the dogs feel extra special. All the shelter dogs were also treated with homemade doggie cupcakes.
“While these dogs haven’t found their person yet, they have won the hearts of everyone who’s caring for them here at the Santa Fe Animal Shelter,” Kirdar said. “Julie, Doja, Paisley, Lino and Nicholas just need to find the right person who will love them for who they are.”
All dogs that have been at the shelter for more than 100 days are fee-waived. For more information, visit, SFHumaneSociety.org
