Santa Fe Animal Shelter Launches ‘Name Your Own Price’ Adoption Event To Ease Animal Overcrowding

SFAS News:

Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society (SFAS) is hosting a “Name Your Own Price” adoption event to help alleviate the already overcrowded shelter.

The promotion, which runs the entire month of January, allows people looking to bring home a new pet to name the price they want to pay for the adoption.

Beginning a new year at over-capacity conditions is not ideal, and new strategies are being implemented daily to provide the best care for the animals, SFAS Public Relations Officer Murad Kirdar said.

“We are putting out an urgent call to find homes for over a hundred dogs and to encourage adoptions,” Kirdar said. “This month, we are letting anyone name their own price to adopt any animal in the shelter.”

If people cannot commit to adopting an animal, there is another way to help. According to Kirdar, a foster family allows a dog a much-needed mental break from the hustle and bustle of the shelter environment and gives them a chance to decompress while living in an actual home.

“Many animals that come to the shelter are not used to the noise, strange smells and small kennels, and they don’t do well here. It’s a scary environment for them,” Kirdar said. “A home environment provides the animal a place to relax and unwind.”

The “Name Your Own Price” promotion will continue through Jan. 31, and includes spay or neuter, microchip and age-appropriate vaccinations. The promotion does not include shelter heroes.
