Sangre de Cristo Chorale News:

SANTA FE – The Sangre de Cristo Chorale continues its 46th season with Pilgrimage of Hope at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 9 at St. Bede’s Episcopal Church in Santa Fe.

The 36-voice Chorale is led by Music Director Dr. George Case and is accompanied by pianist Deborah Wagner.

Pilgrimage of Hope explores the use of music to both interpret conflict and suffering, and to provide understanding, comfort, and hope. The centerpiece of the concert is the New Mexico premiere of The Opposites Game by Dale Trumbore. The text is a poem written by Brendan Constantine whose students were assigned to analyze Emily Dickinson’s poem My Life had stood … a Loaded Gun by choosing the opposite of each word in the poem. Additional pieces from the early 1600’s through current times round out the concert.

In describing the concert, Dr. Case said, “I chose this repertoire to explore how music has been used by composers to help make sense of the world in challenging times. Dale Trumbore’s The Opposites Game sets to music a classroom discussion full of disagreement as students struggle to find the opposite of the word ‘gun’. The music mirrors the students’ debate as it ranges from confrontational to poignant to harmonious to confrontational again before coming to a resolution at the end. It’s a fascinating piece and we’re looking forward to sharing it along with music of hope and redemption by composers William Byrd, Eric Whitacre, Stephen Paulus, Morten Lauridsen and Craig Hella Johnson.”

This concert is the third of four concert cycles for the 2023-2024 season. Tickets cost $25 for adults and students under 18 are free. Tickets are available online at sdcchorale.org.
