State Fair News:
Each year thousands of New Mexicans and visitors line the streets of Route 66 to take in the sights and sounds and witness the incredible floats and displays that make up the New Mexico State Fair Parade.
As is custom, the parade honors notable New Mexicans by naming a grand marshal. With the selection of Mayor Lynn Crawford of Ruidoso to serve as the grand marshal for the parade, which took place today, Sept. 7, this year is no exception. Crawford’s exemplary leadership, particularly during the challenging times of the South Fork and Salt fires, has made him a respected figure in his community and throughout the state.
Mayor Crawford has been instrumental in guiding Ruidoso through several crises with grace and determination. During the devastating South Fork and Salt fires, he coordinated a swift and effective emergency response that ensured the safety of residents. His leadership was crucial in the evacuation process, providing clear communication and support to those affected. Crawford’s dedication to public safety and community welfare has been further demonstrated in his management during flash floods following the fires.
Joining Mayor Crawford as co-grand marshal was none other than New Mexico’s beloved Smokey Bear. Known for his iconic message of wildfire prevention, Smokey Bear is a symbol of forest preservation and environmental stewardship. As a treasured figure in New Mexico’s history, Smokey Bear’s presence at the parade highlighted the importance of protecting the state’s natural resources and serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to prevent wildfires. Together, Mayor Crawford and Smokey Bear represented a commitment to community safety and resilience in the face of adversity.
According to State Fair General Manager Dan Mourning, “We’re proud to take this opportunity to honor Ruidoso Mayor Lynn Crawford and to recognize his exceptional leadership during and in the aftermath of the recent fires. Alongside the firefighters and emergency responders, the mayor managed the devastating incident with skill and reassuring guidance on behalf of his community. We’re equally excited to include Smokey Bear as the co-grand marshal considering his iconic status and steadfast commitment to safeguarding our communities against the dangers of wildfires.”
