Rotary Virtual Meeting Features Chief Dino Sgambellone

Los Alamos Police Chief Dino Sgambellone

ROTARY News:

Los Alamos Police Chief Dino Sgambellone spoke May 10 at the Rotary Club of Los Alamos, the Club’s first guest speaker via Zoom since the corona virus restrictions were imposed.

Chief Sgambellone substituted for the County’s Emergency Manager, Beverly Simpson who was called away to a teleconference.

Referring to data at hand, Sgambellone quoted figures that reveal that 425 Los Alamos County residents have been tested for COVID-19, with 10 returning positive (although NMDOH continues to report 6 cases).

Regrettably, the County has recorded four suicides since mid-February, which exceeds 12-month figures.  No details or correlation with COVID-19 were cited. Although the department’s Victims’ Advocate is currently serving 20 clientele, there appear to be no increases in domestic violence reports.

Sgambellone also commented that he is most worried about his police officers, personnel in dispatch and detention, and inmates contracting the virus, as these have the most likelihood of exposure. Not only are employees wearing masks and following safety protocols as conscientiously as possible, but a cleaning crew decontaminates the police facilities daily.

When asked what protocols he would like to see remain in place after COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, Sgambellone mentioned that increased public health procedures for inmates would probably be closely considered.

Sgambellone, who began his law enforcement career in 1991, retired from the Mansfield Police Department (Ohio) in 2013 to accept the position of Chief of Police here in Los Alamos. Upon arriving in New Mexico, he has focused on improving internal processes and customer service delivery, most notably by earning national accreditation.

Chief Sgambellone holds Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Business and a Ph.D. in Public Safety.
