Rotary Club Hears About Delancey Street Mission

From left, Herman Laparovsky, Chris Briceno and Donald Rosenow, representatives from Delancey Street Foundation, spoke Tuesday to the Rotary Club of Los Alamos about the work the non-profit does based from its 17-acre campus near Alcalde.  In addition to truck driving and moving, Delancey offers its residents vocational training in woodworking and furniture building, upholstery, catering and culinary arts, accounting, retail sales, wastewater management, livestock management, and landscaping. Through Rotary District 5520 community grants, the Rotary Club was able to provide a new commercial refrigerator for the catering department this year. Last year’s Rotary Club funding of new computers and computer stations helped lead to an increase in Delancey Street high school equivalency graduates this year. The Rotary Club of Los Alamos and Delancey St. are now working together with UNM-Los Alamos to explore opportunities to provide entrepreneurial and basic business courses at Delancey Street. Founded in 1971 in San Francisco, Delancey Street is the country’s leading residential self-help organization. It receives no government financial assistance and is completely self-sustaining based upon services, retails sales, and private donations. To learn more, click here. Photo by Linda Hull
