Los Alamos Jewish Center News:
In preparation for the upcoming Jewish High Holidays of Rosh HaShanah (the Jewish New Year) and Yom Kippur (the Jewish Day of Atonement), Rabbi Jack Shlachter will facilitate a two-part class on the holidays at the Los Alamos Jewish Center, 2400 Canyon Road.
Each session will be free-standing, so participants can attend one or both. No charge.
Part 1 will focus on Rosh HaShanah. It will take place at 8 p.m. today, following the monthly “later time” 7 p.m. Shabbat evening services. All are welcome to join at 6 p.m. for a pot luck dinner before services.
Part 2, focused on Yom Kippur, will be held Saturday, Sept. 21. The evening starts at 6 p.m. with a light “third meal of Shabbat” pot luck. The class will begin at 6:45 p.m., followed by Havdalah, the brief, song-filled ritual of spices, wine, and braided candle that marks the conclusion of the Jewish Sabbath and bring Jews into the workweek. Havdalah will take place at approximately 7:40 p.m. Due to Jewish dietary laws, pot luck food should be dairy, vegetarian/vegan, or kosher fish only.
The Los Alamos Jewish Center holds activities year-round, including Sabbath and holiday services; adult education; children’s religious and Hebrew language education; Tot Shabbats for families with young children; a 20s/30s young adult group; social action projects; and social gatherings.
