Robinson: Code Enforcement Path Forward

By JAMES ROBINSON
County Councilor

It may come as no surprise that enforcement of the nuisance code continues to be a controversial topic in our community.

When I was appointed to the Community Development Advisory Board (CDAB) in January, I realized something needed to be done to move forward with the entrenchment that has stalled the board and county.

With that, I decided to make it a goal to get a path forward for this difficult topic. On July 20, 2020, I plan to present that path forward to the CDAB.

Similar to my work with the Animal Shelter Advisory Committee, this path forward came from conversations with citizens, county staff, and sub-quorum of council and CDAB members. These interviews were combined with research from books, other communities across the nation, lessons learned, and established best practices.

In this presentation, I have noted recommendations that I believe will allow us to reach a clear, concise, functional and fair nuisance code and enforcement. Some of these recommendations might come as a surprise to some, and controversial to others. However, these recommendations have not been approved by CDAB or Council.

To view this presentation, please go to the agenda for the upcoming CDAB meeting, or join us at 5:30 p.m. July 20. http://losalamos.legistar.com/MeetingDetail.aspx?ID=795201&GUID=779C4D5A-1B28-4F57-879A-49F932C3F9BE&Options=info|&Search=

To provide comment on this path forward idea, please feel free to email either myself at James.robinson@lacnm.us or the CDAB at cdab.cdd@lacnm.us.
