Many Mothers News:

SANTA FE For the third year in a row, the Reverend Duncan Lanum, 80, is undertaking a 1,500 mile bicycle ride in Santa Fe to honor the memory of his beloved wife, Joy Rose Lanum and raise awareness and funds for Many Mothers.

In the summers of 2016 and 2017, Duncan Lanum rode his bike across the country to raise funds for The Joy Rose Lanum Fund. In 2016, he rode 1,500 miles from Santa Fe to Atlanta, Ga., and in 2017 2,000 miles from Santa Fe to Tampa, Fla. Work commitments have been keeping Duncan in town this summer, so he is riding his bike 35-50 miles a day around Santa Fe County for a goal of 1,500 miles.

Many Mothers is a volunteer, community-based organization that is the 21st century version of an extended family. Their free services are available to any family regardless of income level. Trained volunteers provide physical, emotional and practical support to any family during the critical early months following the birth or adoption of a new baby.

Many Mothers also offers safe sleep education and baby boxes to families in Santa Fe, Los Alamos and Rio Arriba counties who are expecting or have a newborn.

Duncan and Joy were married for a short 12 years before her death March 12, 2015. “Joy was the love of my life,” Duncan said, and it is his hope and goal that such a trip will inspire generous contributions to the Joy Rose Lanum Memorial Fund, which will help the nonprofit Many Mothers continue to support mothers and babies.

Joy Lanum was an obstetrics nurse her entire professional career spanning 50 years. For the last 16 years of her life, she combined her skills as a registered nurse and lactation consultant with her unending love for babies by serving as an active volunteer for Many Mothers.

“Joy was such a gift to this community; she helped so many families through her work as a nurse, lactation consultant, and volunteer with Many Mothers,” Executive Director Nancy Guthrie said. Duncan’s love for Joy and desire to continue helping families in Joy’s name is an inspiration to all of us at Many Mothers. We are honored to honor and remember Joy with the Joy Rose Lanum Memorial Fund.”

Many Mothers provides essential support for families with newborns. Women who are expecting or who have recently had a baby may contact Many Mothers at info@manymothers.org or 505.983.5984. For more information, visit manymothers.org.
