Dist. 43 Rep. Christine Chandler, left, leads a discussion on AI at the New Mexico State Legislature’s Science, Technology & Telecommunications Committee meeting Tuesday morning in Council Chambers at the Los Alamos County Municipal Building. Chandler emphasized that the legislature should take steps to regulate AI while not stifling its growth. ‘I think we should impose an obligation on developers to make sure the products they are marketing to other companies or individuals … kind of meet the good housekeeping seal of approval,’ Chandler said. Attending Tuesday’s meeting virtually, New Mexico State University Assistant Professor Melissa Warr explained how AI works, saying it is given data, and from that data, it follows patterns. ‘It is actually always making up things … it just happens to be true a lot of the time,’ Warr said. ‘It is quite amazing what it can do … it is always hallucinating; it is always making things up – following the patterns.’ Santa Fe Institute’s Cristopher Moore, seated next to Rep. Chandler, touched on issues that arise due to AI that are concerning. ‘AI is awesome,’ he said. ‘It is just not quite as awesome as the industry says it is.’ Regulation is necessary, Moore said, pointing out how deepfakes have been utilized in politics and chatbots have encouraged suicide.
