COMMUNITY News:

The community is invited to this year’s Relay For Life in Los Alamos Saturday at the Canyon Rim Trail at Knecht Street and Smith’s Marketplace.

Relay For Life is the signature fundraiser of the American Cancer Society. This event is designed to bring communities together to celebrate (cancer survivors and caregivers), remember (loved ones lost to cancer) and fight back (against cancer by raising money, awareness, and participation).

Four teams have registered to walk and raise funds for Relay for Life Los Alamos. The route will be between Smith’s Marketplace and DP Road Saturday morning until evening to contribute to well-being and being effective and free in the face of cancer.

The relay is the annual and signature fundraising event in Los Alamos for the American Cancer Society and also takes place in hundreds of communities across the nation. All teams are asked to have a team member on the circuit from 10 a.m. until the closing ceremony at 9 p.m. The relay involves teams of people who have asked donors to sponsor them from around the community in fulfilling on this year’s $15K donation goal.

Teams are: Hilde’s Heroes, LAMC Greeters of Hope, Boss Lady Inc. and Team May.

New this year, a 5K Fun Run & Walk will start at 8 a.m. as another way for people to participate and to be a contribution with their donation dollars. The $25 registration fee is a donation toward this year’s $15,000 goal.

While individuals are running or walking the 5K and team members are walking during the Relay, the rest of the community is invited to donate in person at our info booth at Smith’s Marketplace and can enjoy some activities as part of this year’s Saturday events, including a silent auction, Zumba, Hippie Chique Henna Body Art, bounce houses and games from Party to Go, and maybe even some demonstrations of equipment with Los Alamos firefighters and police officers.

At 10 a.m. the Opening Ceremony at Smith’s Marketplace will kick off the Relay portion of the day and will honor cancer survivors with a Survivor’s Lap, followed by a Caregiver Recognition for all of those who take care of people dealing with cancer.

DJ Ryan Schultz will provide music in the morning, and DJ Confused will join for the afternoon Wine & Spirits on the Patio, offered by Smith’s Marketplace, and take participants into the closing ceremony and celebration dance party on the patio (or at Unquarked for those 21 and older if it rains).

Also joining this year’s community event are food vendors Pig & Fig, Ruby K’s, Señor Tacos Señor Tortas, Sirphey, Papa Murphy’s Pizza and North Shore Shave Ice. All of these local food vendors will generously donate a portion of their proceeds to reach this year’s donation goal of $15,000.

Other local businesses and organizations that have contributed to this year’s Relay for Life Los Alamos include: Los Alamos Medical Center, Metzger’s Do It Best, Papa Murphy’s Pizza, Bob’s Bodacious BBQ, Time Out Pizza, DJ Ryan Schultz, DJ Confused, Southwest Office Solutions, Aspen Copies, Unquarked, Los Alamos County & Community Services, Los Alamos High School Key Club, Los Alamos Volunteer Association, Los Alamos Mainstreet, Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce, Los Alamos Visiting Nurses, Los Alamos Health Council, JAM’N 94.7 FM radio, Outlaw Country 107.5 FM,  Ace Harware/Los Alamos Home Improvement and Summit Garden Club.

Smith’s has generously partnered with Relay for Life Los Alamos this year with space and some supplies to host the community event and is sponsoring the silent action, refreshments, wine and spirits on the patio and the survivor birthday party cake.

Those who would like to make a donation or are not registered into the 5K yet are invited to stop by Friday night during the Gordon’s Concert at the Relay For Life info booth or come between 7-7:30 a.m. Saturday at Smith’s Marketplace to the information booth and register. The booth for registrations or donations will be stationed all day Saturday at the Smith’s Trailhead along the South Parking Lot Promenade.
