Registration is underway for the annual Los Alamos County Science and Engineering Fair set for Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015 in the Los Alamos High School Commons Area.
Protocol Forms are available at all Los Alamos Public Schools.
LAPS students, home school students and teachers in grades K-12 will display projects in 4/5th grade individual elementary, K-6th grade elementary class, 6-8th grade junior division and 9-12th grade senior division. The elementary projects are divided into three categories, Physical, Earth and Life Sciences. The students in junior and senior divisions will compete for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place and Honorable Mention in 17 categories. This will give them an opportunity to participate in the Northeastern New Mexico Regional Science and Engineering Fair in Las Vegas, N.M. March 7, 2015.
All 6-12th grade students are present during judging. The junior and senior division students will receive feedback from the judges, which will assess the student’s scientific approach, skills, creativity, clarity, and thoroughness. Therefore, the participation in the County Science and Engineering Fair is valuable experience for student learning. Participation at the Science and Engineering Fair helps the students to achieve State Standard I for every student in every grade level. This standard requires students to understand the processes of scientific investigations and use inquiry and scientific ways of observing, experimenting, predicting, and validating to think critically. This past year there were over 280 student projects displayed at the fair.
Local fair sponsors, who provide special awards, make the Los Alamos County Science Fair a memorable event. The J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee, The New Mexico Consortium, CB FOX, Martyn & Claire Swinhoe, Del Norte Credit Union, The Los Alamos Schools Credit Union, The LA Kiwanis, and the Los Alamos Medical Center were the 2014 t-shirt sponsors. The generosity of these organizations ensured that 284 students participating in the fair received a science fair t-shirt. Los Alamos National Security, LLC and Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos Kiwanis, Navarro Inc., CB FOX and the Los Alamos Elks were corporate sponsors for the 2014 fair. There were more than 30 organizations and individual donors that sponsored the 2014 fair and more than 100 fair judges.
