Rare Sighting Of Male Painted Bunting In Maryland

Jacques Pitteloud, Switzerland’s ambassador to the United States, snapped this rare shot of a male Painted Bunting Sunday in the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park in Maryland. Known for its kaleidoscope of colors, Painted Buntings are commonly seen in Florida and other parts of the south but rarely in Maryland. Sometimes called the ‘Nonpareil’ as a way to describe the brilliant colors of the male Painted Bunting, this species is common around brushy areas and woodland edges, often staying low in dense cover.
