Ribbon Cutting For Leisure Lagoon Art Installation Oct. 7

COUNTY News:

The Los Alamos County Arts in Public Places Board (APPB) invites the public to attend the official ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the completion of a new public art installation by artist Amanda Jaffe at the Leisure Lagoon in Los Alamos.

Details:

  • When: 10-10:45 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7; and
  • Where: Leisure Lagoon, 2760 Canyon Road.

This five-panel porcelain tile installation explores the calming and transformative qualities of water through rich textures, flowing patterns, and natural imagery. With panel titles such as “Night Snow / Pool” and “Blue Rain / Calm Pool”, the series evokes the meditative relationship between people and water.

Jaffe is a celebrated ceramic artist and professor emeritus of New Mexico State University, where she taught for 26 years. Though originally from California, she has called Las Cruces home since 1985, and her work has appeared in public spaces across the country, including Texas, Washington, the Staten Island Zoo, and now, Los Alamos.

The five-panel ceramic installation began in 2021 as part of the addition of the Leisure Lagoon to the Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center. The final two panels were installed this August, completing this Public Art project.

APPB members ask the community to join them as they dedicate this significant new addition to the public art landscape of Los Alamos County and honor the work of a talented New Mexico artist whose vision adds lasting beauty to this local community space.
