The community of Los Alamos is invited to a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the new Los Alamos Middle School Turf Field and Track at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11.
The ceremony takes place at the LAMS football field prior to the start of the Hawks football game vs. McCurdy.
The new turf and track project started back in 2009 with the LAPS Athletic Department investigating the benefits of a turf field.
Following the construction of the Sullivan Field Turf project, the LAMS football field and track project got underway.
The project began in April 2012 and the turf was completed in August in time for the start of fall sports. The track is scheduled for its final top rubberized coating beginning Oct. 12.
Both the football field turf and the track have been under the management of Centennial Contractors.
Craig Wehner and Los Alamos Landscaping handled the initial groundbreaking and base work including removal of existing turf and track cinders, leveling the field area and installing the base course.
Academy Turf Company was chosen to install the field turf.
A new scoreboard for the field was installed in May by Daktronics. The scoreboard was paid for by donations from Los Alamos National Bank.
LAMS is one of the few middle schools in the state of New Mexico with an update in athletic facilities to include a turf field and all-weather track.
LAMS is fortunate to be in a community where athletics is an important part of our youth. These projects at LAMS were funded through LAPS Athletic Referendum funds.
