The public is encouraged to bring their drones out to compete at Ashley Pond 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 8 during ScienceFest Discovery Day.
Participants will have an opportunity to fly in a competitive drone course and chance to win up to $100 in Chamber of Commerce Checks, good at dozens of businesses and restaurants in Los Alamos and White Rock.
Two courses will be available to the public, a Beginner and an Advanced level, and three prizes awarded for each category.
Due to FAA regulations, participants must have proof of current drone registration for any drone weighing over .55 lb.
Advanced sign-up to participate is not necessary; participants bring their drone to the Drone Zone tent at Ashley Pond Park and receive a time slot to compete. Winners will be announced at 2 p.m. at the Ashley Pond stage, several drone models will also be on display and demonstrated near the ScienceFest Drone Zone.
The LANL Emergency Response Operations Team will be displaying a few of their drones as well. Thank you to volunteer organizers Ed Hyde and Jim Harris for making the Drone Zone happen at ScienceFest Discovery Day again this year!
