COUNTY News:

The Los Alamos County Art in Public Places (APP) Board is seeking public comment on proposed art for the new Leisure Lagoon at the Aquatic Center on Canyon Road.

The proposed art created by Amanda Jaffe is a collection of five ceramic panels constructed by multiple smaller individual ceramic tiles. The panels represent various wet weather and water.

The artist approached the designs with the idea of the soothing, uplifting and calming nature of immersion in water. It is proposed that each panel be placed under a window of which there are five inside the Leisure Lagoon.

Each complete panel would measure 7.5 feet tall by 5.5 feet wide. The proposed cost of the panels is $20,000 each, for a total cost of $100,000.

The APP Board meets at 5:30 p.m. the fourth Thursday of every month, and hosts a hybrid meeting format. Agendas and minutes can be found on the Los Alamos County Council website, then clicking on the “Read Agendas and Minutes” button: https://losalamos.legistar.com/Calendar.aspx

Art in Public Places Board is established to encourage the integration of art into the architecture of municipal structures, increase the general public awareness of art, to visually enhance the community, to capture a part of our history for future generations, to promote the establishment of a collection of art with the works of artists who live or work, or who have lived or worked in Los Alamos County having a priority.

The Art in Public Places fund was created for the express purposes of acquiring, installing and maintaining county-owned works of art and for the administrative support, cataloging, display and use attendant to the County’s ownership of the works of art. The fund is supported by one percent of the budget of any capital improvement project and one-half of one percent of the budget of any such road project.

The Los Alamos County Art in Public Places Board would like to encourage anyone, including kids that will be utilizing the new Leisure Lagoon, to participate in the survey. The Survey is being conducted via SurveyMonkey, the link and QR code are below:
