MAINSTREET AND CREATIVE DISTRICT News:

Los Alamos MainStreet and Creative District (LAMCD) announces the official evolution of projectY cowork into the MainStreet MarketPlace at 168 Central Park Square. The remodeled 1,500-square-foot space integrates coworking, private offices, and a soon-to-launch retail incubator designed to serve as an economic engine for the region.

The relocation comes as the program enters its 10th year of operation, shifting focus to address a critical “retail gap” where Los Alamos’s retail trade per capita sits at just 6.5 percent compared to the 13.3 percent national average.

“The MainStreet MarketPlace represents a strategic shift toward long-term economic vitality for our community,” LAMCD Executive Director Jacquelyn Connolly said. “By evolving the projectY model, we are providing a dedicated home where entrepreneurs can transition from an idea to a physical storefront, effectively bridging the gap between home-based startups and independent commercial success”.

A Pipeline for Success: Accelerator, Incubator, and Shop

A central component of this evolution is the continued development of the Business Accelerator program, which provides emerging entrepreneurs with structured guidance, mentorship, and practical resources to transform ideas into sustainable businesses.

To further this mission, the program is expanding to include the Retail Incubator, launched in partnership with founding sponsor Enterprise Bank & Trust, allowing entrepreneurs to trial business models in a professional storefront without the burden of high overhead costs. Complementing these efforts is the MainStreet MarketPlace Shop, a retail opportunity designed to pop up within existing retail spaces to expand visibility for local entrepreneurs.

This initiative is a practical solution for business owners not yet ready for a full storefront, allowing them to bypass staffing challenges while moving beyond infrequent sales at local events and markets to build a consistent clientele.

A Versatile Hub for Entrepreneurs and Professionals

The MarketPlace remains a fully functional professional environment while offering specialized support for emerging businesses. The new layout and program features include:

  • The Retail Incubator: A dedicated storefront space for market testing concepts and unique retail offerings.
  • Private Offices and Studios: Five private offices and specialized studios that provide the quiet, enclosed work environments long requested by members.
  • Shared Amenities: Modern professional facilities including a communal kitchen, storage areas, and specialized “benching” for coworking members.
  • Business Development Resources: Access to structured coaching and networking designed to accelerate business success and regional job creation.

The transformation of the MainStreet MarketPlace is made possible through a robust network of partners dedicated to long-term economic resiliency. This support is bolstered by $10,000 in grant funds secured from the LANL Community Partnerships Office (CPO) and the New Mexico Resiliency Alliance. Additionally, the project benefits from regional collaborations with the New Mexico Economic Development Department (NMEDD), SBDC at UNM-Los Alamos, and New Mexico MainStreet. Together with the Los Alamos Commerce & Development Corporation (LACDC), these partners are creating a vibrant downtown atmosphere where local ideas turn into sustainable businesses.
