Posts From The Road: Monument Valley

Classic View: The last light of day shines on the West Mitten and East Mitten Buttes and Merrick Butte. This most well known view of the park is seen from the Tribal Park Visitors Center. MV News:

The Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park sits in an area of the Colorado Plateau known as Monument Valley. The park lies within the Navajo Nation Reservation and is located on the Arizona–Utah border near the four corners area.

Numerous sandstone buttes, mesas, and other geological formations are found in the area, which was made famous when Hollywood began filming the old western movies in the area beginning in the 1930s.

All of these photos were from the visitors center or Highway 163, which runs by the park. A more extensive view of the different formations can be seen by driving the 17 mile park loop road or taking a tour through various park tour groups. Both options require additional fees. Because of time restraints, we were unable to take the loop road but will do so on a return trip.

Editor’s note: Longtime Los Alamos photographer Gary Warren and his wife Marilyn are traveling around the country and he shares his photographs, which appear in the ‘Posts from the Road’ series published in the Sunday edition of the Los Alamos Daily Post.

Run Forrest Run: This view of Monument Valley was made famous in the movie Forrest Gump. The view is looking south on Highway 163 in Utah, which is the view visitors see when arriving from the north about 13 miles from the park. Photo by Gary Warren/ladailypost.com
