Stacked Like Stones: Jim Reinder built Carhenge by lifting the automobiles into place with a crane and welding the cars together. Reinder used cars as close to the actual size of the stones used in Stonehenge and duplicated the size of Stonehenge in building Carhenge. Photo by Gary Warren/ladailypost.com

Located in the Nebraska panhandle miles from any major Interstate, 10 acres were carved out of farm country for Carhenge. The display is a replica pf England’s Stonehenge but Carhenge is built from 39 American automobiles.
Jim Reinder had the idea to construct a memorial in honor of his father. Reinder had previously lived in England and decided to build the replica on farmland about two miles north of Alliance, Nebr. Instead of huge stones, Reinder built Carhenge out of automobiles. The display is a copy of the Stonehenge structures, shape, proportions and size.
Carhenge has been featured in TV shows, movies, commercials, and is a top rated roadside attraction. Carhenge also gained recognition in 2017 as more than 4,000 visitors including the Nebraska Governor converged on the site to view the solar eclipse. Alliance, Nebr. was in the path of totality for the eclipse.
Carhenge was completed and dedicated in 1987. It is open to the public daily and free to visit but donations are accepted.
