While visiting Sheridan, Wyo. we wanted to explore the historic downtown area of the town. We were in Sheridan a year ago and wanted to return to the town of about 18,000 that sits at the base of the Bighorn Mountains.

One of the features of the downtown area that impressed us last year was the outside public art displays throughout downtown. As it turns out, Sheridan is home to more than 100 pieces of outdoor artworks with the majority of those displayed in the historic downtown district.

In 2001, the mayor of Sheridan formed a Public Arts Committee. The collection began with eight sculptures that first year and has continued to grow ever since. The leadership in Sheridan felt it was imperative to incorporate arts and culture to make the revitalization of historic downtown Sheridan successful.

The art ranges from western to modern but the majority of the pieces have a western theme. For the purpose of this post, I have chosen to concentrate on the western lifestyles art pieces since that is what much of Sheridan’s history is about.

Today the downtown district is very alive and active. More than 90 of these works of art are seen on every corner and throughout downtown Sheridan. I am sure the art pieces have contributed to the success of historic downtown Sheridan, Wyo. We will continue to spend time in Sheridan and discover other features of this beautiful “old west” town near the Bighorn Mountains in northern Wyoming.

Editor’s note: Longtime Los Alamos photographer Gary Warren and his wife Marilyn are traveling around the country, and he shares his photographs, which appear in the “Posts from the Road” series published in the Sunday edition of the Los Alamos Daily Post.
