Special Olympics is founded on the belief that people with intellectual disabilities can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports. Proceeds of the tournament will benefit athletes Northern New Mexico athletes from Espanola, Pojoaque, Santa Fe, White Rock and Los Alamos who participate in the Los Alamos Special Olympics Program. This year local athletes are participating in golf, track and field, bocce ball, volleyball, basketball, swimming and bowling.
“We are constantly looking to expand the opportunities for Special Olympians to compete in additional sports. Each of these sports has associated costs as well as their own state competitions in New Mexico locations that range from Las Cruces to Farmington,” tournament organizer Jon Rau said. “Many of the athletes who participate in these competitions have limited opportunities for financial success. Funding for travel to and from these events is typically the responsibility of local programs.”
Rau is asking businesses and private individuals to consider sponsoring a hole for the tournament. Gold sponsorships are $500 and include a tee box sign at your assigned hole, recognition at the awards ceremony and a framed picture of the Special Olympics Team. Silver sponsorships are $300 and include a tee box sign at your assigned hole, recognition at the awards ceremony and a certificate of appreciation and bronze sponsorships are $100 and include a tee box sign at your assigned hole and recognition at the awards ceremony.
Rau also is accepting donations of items such as hats, golf balls, tees, tee-shirts, or anything that can be used as door prizes and gifts for tournament participants.
