When Pig + Fig Café owner Laura Hamilton tried tapas for the first time, she was seven years old and visiting her mother’s hometown, Cebreros, Spain. She ordered Gambas al Ajillo … and didn’t want to share it!

In fact, she loved it so much that she used all of her allowance to order more for herself. Now that she is older, and more mature, she is willing to share her first love (tapas) with her friends, family, and the community.

The Pig + Fig Café at 35 Rover Blvd, Suite G, in White Rock has expanded its hours and menu to include tapa and beer, wine and sangria, 4 to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The restaurant is closed Sundays. Breakfast is served 7 to 11 a.m. and lunch is 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

What is tapas, anyway?

Hamilton explains the history of tapas. “In Spain, workers would come in from the fields, go to the bar and order drinks. In the hot summer, flies would be everywhere, and nobody likes to get a fly in their beer! So the bartenders would serve a small plate with a little snack and they would use it to cover their drinks. Tapas means ‘cover’. “It’s become a tradition, and in the past 20 to 30 years it has become very trendy. But growing up, it was bar food.”

The new tapas menu includes Tortilla de Patata, Esperragos and Gambas Azafran. There is salmon, beef tenderloin, lobster and pickles of all kinds. Bring a friend, and enjoy the foods that remind Hamilton of the days when her grandmother hung a jamon serrano from the kitchen ceiling and she would stand on a chair to help herself.
