PEEC News:

Head to the Los Alamos Nature Center Tuesday, Feb. 11 for an evening of family fun.

The night kicks off with a Family Star Party in the planetarium at 5:30 p.m. and continues 6-7 p.m. with Family Night.

Both of these programs take place on the second Tuesday of every month and are free thanks to the Pajarito Environmental Education Center’s sponsors: New Mexico Bank & Trust sponsors Family Star Parties and Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos sponsors Family Nights.

At the Family Star Party, participants will look for the farthest away object visible to the naked eye: the Andromeda galaxy, 2.5 million light years away. The focus is on the western sky, where participants will see the planets Venus and Mercury, and learn to locate the Andromeda galaxy using some western constellations.

PEEC Education Programs Director Siobhan Niklasson will lead this Family Star Party.

At Family Night, attendees will enjoy a craft, story or other activity with Mesa Public Library’s Melissa Mackey. Parents are required to stay with their children at both programs.

The nature center’s gift shop also will be hosting a used book sidewalk sale 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11. All books in the sale are 25 cents. Anyone can stop by to browse the selection before, during or after the Family Star Party and Family Night.

The Los Alamos Nature Center is open until 8 p.m., Tuesday evenings, so families can stay after these programs to play and explore the exhibits.
