PED & LANL Foundation To Host Series Of Regional Community Meetings To Help Shape Future Of Education

LANL Foundation News:

Beginning next week, the New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) and the LANL Foundation will host a series of regional community meetings across the state.

These open-house style events are designed to inform and engage community members in shaping the state’s Action Plan in response to the Martinez/Yazzie lawsuit.

This plan will guide how New Mexico supports:

  • Native American students:
  • English language learners:
  • Students with disabilities: and
  • Students from low-income families.

PED and the LANL Foundation are reaching out to educators, parents, youth, advocates, and community members across New Mexico for their insights, ideas, and lived experiences to help build an education system that truly serves these students.

Throughout the session, there will be multiple opportunities to learn, reflect, and share input through one-on-one conversations, small group discussions, and written feedback.

Attendees are welcome anytime between 4-7 p.m.

Important questions that will be explored include:

  • How do we create learning environments that reflect students’ cultures and identities?
  • What do students and teachers need to succeed in the classroom?
  • How can we ensure that schools are funded fairly and resources are used wisely?
  • What must schools, communities, and governments do to fulfill their responsibilities to these students?

To support full participation, the following will be provided:

  • Free food;
  • On-site childcare;
  • Translation services; and
  • ASL interpretation.

About the Martinez/Yazzie Action Plan

The Martinez/Yazzie Action Plan is New Mexico’s formal response to the landmark court ruling that found the state failed to meet its constitutional obligation to provide a uniform and sufficient education for all students. The action plan is being developed by the New Mexico Public Education Department in partnership with the LANL Foundation, WestEd, and the Legislative Education Study Committee. It focuses on five court-mandated areas: access to high-quality instruction, culturally and linguistically responsive educators, academic and behavioral supports, equitable funding, and data-driven accountability. The planning process includes statewide community engagement to ensure the plan reflects the voices and needs of students, families, educators, and tribal communities across New Mexico.
