EMNRD News:

SANTA FE — The Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department, State Parks Division announces that Pecos Canyon State Park, New Mexico’s 35th State Park, is open to camping for the first time. Park staff are excited to welcome campers for the 2021 season.

As the newest park in the system, Pecos Canyon State Park will continue to undergo improvements in services and facilities. There are currently three campgrounds open, Mora, Tererro, and Bert Clancy. For the 2021 season the Mora Campground will offer 11 sites and the Tererro Campground will offer 13 sites, all by reservation only.

Campsite reservations must be made online at www.reserveamerica.com prior to arriving at the park or by using the Reserve America Camping App on your mobile device.

The Bert Clancy Campground is offering nine sites, available on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost is $10 per vehicle, per night. Visitors are encouraged to bring exact cash or a check for payment at the self-pay station. Change is not available on site and staff are unable to process credit/debit card payments at this time. Day-use passes may also be purchased in advance online at www.reserveamerica.com.

Pecos Canyon State Park will remain under Stage II fire restrictions within the state park boundaries for the entire 2021 season. Stage II fire restrictions prohibit building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire, charcoal, coal, or wood stove. The use of devices fueled solely by liquid petroleum or LPG fuels that can be turned on and off are allowed. Such devices can only be used in an area that is barren or cleared of all overhead and surrounding flammable materials within three feet of the device. Smoking is prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle or building.

Pecos Canyon State Park is currently recruiting a volunteer camp host for the 2021 season. For more information, contact the park at 505-670-8196. Construction of permanent campground facilities and park improvements are scheduled to begin this fall.

It is important for visitors to continue to check for details on specific park hours of operation and additional information before visiting. Check the State Parks website and know before you go. Park visitors are reminded that park staff are enforcing the current public health order. Remember to always recreate responsibly and pack out all trash.
