Letter To The Editor: Response To Mr. Spencer

By GREG WHITE
Los Alamos

In regard to Mr. Spencer’s letter (link), details do matter especially in the law. He is correct that this is an open carry state and the actual law is close to but not accurately reflected on the New Mexico State Police website.

Perhaps they missed a change to the law. The law should always be checked at the official legal site for all of New Mexico’s laws, state and local. That would be the New Mexico Compilation Commission (link).

Also despite the Constitution of New Mexico expressly forbidding any laws against guns, the legislature

Home Country: Lots Of Love At Old Swimming Hole

By SLIM RANDLES
Home Country

Bert and Maizie were down at the swimming hole on Lewis Creek the other day. Saturday it was. The sun was bright hot and these two lovers had found a nice patch of shade near the tire swing tree where they could sip iced tea and watch the youngsters.

The little kids were in the shallow wading area, some in underwear, some in none-derwear, and all of them squealing and splashing. The kids who had turned 13 or 14, however, waited their turns at the tire swing. One by one they swung out, flashing in the sun, arching and stretching and

Just One Thing To Do This Week: Throw A Party

By MARY BETH MAASSEN
Los Alamos

I really love throwing a good party, and I have been organizing and hosting gatherings both personally and professionally for nearly 40 years. One of the first events I ever hosted was a housewarming party. My now ex-husband and I had bought a brand new tract home in a starter neighborhood.
We were thrilled to be homeowners. It was March in Phoenix and I was heavily pregnant. My daughter was two years old and my son was due in a few short weeks.
I had worked for days to get our new home clean and organized. We had decorated and covered the folding tables in lovely linens,

Izraelevitz: Sheriff Investigate Corruption? Makes Absolutely No Sense

By DAVID IZRAELEVITZ, Chair
Los Alamos County Council

Corruption: dishonest or illegal behavior especially by powerful people (such as government officials or police officers) (Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

My fellow councilor Pete Sheehey has proposed a Council resolution to more expansively define the roles and responsibilities of the Los Alamos County Sheriff’s Office. The last paragraph of his resolution is very troubling, as it would give the Sheriff the power to perform a criminal investigation should the Police Department be deemed, in the Sheriff’s “reasonable” opinion, to Read More

Affordable housing seems to be a major

Tonight … Science On Tap: Preparing For The Eclipse

LA CREATIVE DISTRICT News:

A full solar eclipse will pass over much of the United States Friday. It’s a rare opportunity indeed. Join us tonight at Science On Tap, at 5:30 p.m. at UnQuarked in Los Alamos to prepare!

The last such eclipse was in February of 1979 and the next one won’t be until October 2023. What makes these celestial transits special is an opportunity to view the sun’s corona (or its extensive low-density atmosphere) when it is visible. It is only during a total solar eclipse that such investigation is possible.
