Nominations Sought For New Los Alamos Living Treasures

Do you know someone you think should be a Living Treasure of Los Alamos? Nominations will be accepted through May 31, and LTLA board will choose three new Treasures, who will be honored at a ceremony in October 2024. Nominees must be current residents of Los Alamos County.

Selection of the new Treasures will be based on letters of nomination from the public; letters should include the following information:

  • In which areas did the nominee make volunteer contributions to life in Los Alamos?
  • How many years has the nominee been involved in community

New Mexico Environment Department Provides Financing To United Parcel Service To Replace 16 Package Cars

ALBUQUERQUE — The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) awarded United Parcel Service (UPS) $473,222 in grant funding to replace 16 delivery vehicles with low pollution compressed natural gas (CNG) delivery vehicles.

“New Mexico has helped school districts and nonprofit organizations reduce their climate-warming emissions from their vehicle fleets,” Environment Secretary James Kenney said. “Now, UPS is following suit by retiring diesel-fueled vehicles and replacing them with cleaner vehicles.”

County Council To Relocate Meetings During Early Voting

COUNTY News:

Due to early voting activities, the Los Alamos County Council will temporarily relocate its upcoming council meetings to White Rock Fire Station 3 at 129 N.M. State Road 4 until after the primary election on June 4.

The affected meeting dates are May 7, May 21 and May 28. Meetings are held at 6 p.m., and a Zoom option is offered for remote participation (Zoom Link). Agendas are available 72 hours before the scheduled meeting and can be found via the online Legistar Calendar.

FBI: Mescalero Man Pleads Guilty To Stabbing Charges

FBI News:

ALBUQUERQUE — A Mescalero man, Lestat Cree Valdez, 21, pleaded guilty in federal court to charges arising from the stabbing of an enrolled member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe.

According to court records, May 18, 2023, Valdez assaulted Jane Doe, an enrolled member of the Mescalero Apache tribe by straddling her and stabbing her repeatedly in the head, face, and chest with a knife, causing Jane Doe to suffer serious bodily injury.

At sentencing, Valdez faces up to 10 years in prison followed by three years of supervised release.

WildEarth Guardians: Greens Applaud Translocation Of Mexican Gray Wolves To Southeastern Arizona

DOUGLAS — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service translocated a Mexican gray wolf family back to the wild in southeastern Arizona on Monday, a move conservation groups are celebrating as a successful step in lobo recovery.

The wolves, a female called “Llave” (#1828) and her mate, “Wonder” (#2774) were both originally born in the wild in the Mexican Wolf Experimental Population Area.

The Los Alamos High School Topper Varsity Tennis District Tournament was held at Santa Fe on April 26-27, 2024. The boys placed second and the girls came in fourth.

The boys beat Roberston 6-3 in the semifinals, with Spencer Urbatsch clinching the win. They fell to Santa Fe Prep 3-5 in the finals in a tight battle.
