Op-Ed: The Sounds Of Summer And The Promise Of New Mexico’s Future

Summer has a soundtrack.

It’s the splash of a cannonball into a pool. The laughter of kids chasing each other through a park. The crack of a bat at a Little League game. The pages of a favorite book turning on a warm afternoon.

Across New Mexico, summer is a season of memories in the making.

It’s also a season of continued learning.

While school may be out, students across our state are participating in summer reading programs, visiting libraries, attending camps, and discovering new interests that will help shape their futures and the state’s workforce. Parents are encouraging their children to keep reading. Teachers are already preparing their classrooms for another school year.

Programs like New Mexico’s Summer Reading Program help students stay engaged, strengthen critical reading skills, and avoid the learning loss that can happen when school is out of session. For many children, a great book can open the door to a lifelong love of learning.

Those opportunities don’t happen by accident.

They are made possible by teachers, parents, community organizations, libraries, and countless New Mexicans who invest their time and resources in helping the next generation succeed.

New Mexico’s oil and natural gas industry is proud to be among them.

Much of the conversation around our industry focuses on production numbers, public policy debates, or economic statistics. Those discussions are important. But they don’t always capture the human side of the story.

The reality is that energy supports the things that matter most to New Mexico families. It helps fund our schools. It supports thousands of jobs and local businesses. It provides revenue that allows our state to invest in education, infrastructure, and essential services.

And it helps create opportunities for students and teachers in communities across New Mexico.

That’s why the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association was proud to partner with Energizing Our Future New Mexico this summer to award $500 classroom supply gift cards to teachers from communities across the state.

The gift cards are a small way to recognize the extraordinary work teachers do every day. Long before students walk through the classroom door in August, educators are spending their summers planning lessons, organizing supplies, and finding new ways to help students succeed.

The teachers we recognized come from different parts of New Mexico, including counties like Doña Ana, San Juan, and Bernalillo, but they all share a common commitment to helping young people learn, grow, and achieve their potential.

Their work matters because education, including literacy and STEM, matter.

When a child discovers a favorite author or scientist. When a teacher receives supplies for his or her classroom. When a family spends a summer afternoon reading together at the library. Those moments may seem small, but they add up to something much larger.

They help build New Mexico’s future.

This summer, as we enjoy time with family and friends, let’s also celebrate the educators, parents, librarians, and community leaders who are helping our young people learn and thrive.

Because the sounds of summer are more than just the sounds of fun.

They’re the sounds of a brighter future being built one student, one teacher, and one community at a time.
